The Cattete is a traditional and historic neighborhood in the South Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Presents a strong trade and a population of mostly middle class.
The district has been established to the president of the Brazilian republic, which was located in the Presidential Palace, which is today the main munumento region. Like Gloria and Santa Teresa, had a past noble neighborhood, but nowadays, the Cattete has more characteristics of a typical neighborhood of Rio Centro, than a neighborhood in the South Zone (unlike its neighbors Flamengo and Orange) although the city government still considers, under official Catete as part of Zona Sul even having undergone a process of revitalization (mostly from the 90s), is far from the glamor that once had during the first decades of twentieth century. The large presence of homeless people, crack users and the large amount of old and poorly maintained houses contribute to this, the district could not renew itself over the years. The district has been one of the noblest of the city, before transferring to the Brazilian capital Brasilia in 1960.
