The Moorish quarter is one of the most traditional neighborhoods of Lisbon, which owes its name to the fact that D. Afonso Henriques, after the conquest of Lisbon, have confined one area of the city for Muslims. It was in this neighborhood that remained the Moors after the Christian reconquest. In turn, the Jews were confined to the neighborhoods of the Castle.
In this and the surrounding neighborhoods, originated the first Portuguese Mudejar art productions, which were to give way for the emergence of the Manueline.
House where he grew Mariza, Moorish quarter.
The sadness and melancholy of his songs are in the Fado origin. Born in Street Chaplain, near the Alley of the Three Mills, Maria Severa Onofriana, first Portuguese fado singer and ultimate expression of the fado Season1 In the house across the street, was born in the twentieth century, who was considered the "fate of the king of Mouraria" Fernando Maurício. The Street Chaplain is now part of the Fado iconography. Further up in a house color pink Transom of Lagares, Mariza grew, the most international contemporary Portuguese fado singer. By the house, now closed to the public, was located the Zalala restaurant where Mariza learned to sing fado.
After the public opening of the Mall of Mouraria in Martim Moniz, the neighborhood has become a quite busy and welcoming place. Currently, the Moorish quarter is considered one of the safest districts of the capital; is a meeting point for people of different cultures and, simultaneously, a place that keeps alive their ancient folk traditions, as confirmed by the existence of several fado houses, bars, taverns and cultural and sport associations alongside shops Chinese and Indian origin, among others.
