Traditional Cretan Stone House / 4: Chania Lejlighed #100Greece

It took us many years to renovate the house with respect to its special characteristics. Crete is an island that few visit and never come back. Wild but sweet. Rough but gentle. Dry and Green. 

Our houses are the only ones remaining from the old traditional settlement of Rapaniana Kolympari. This settlement had the characteristic that all of its houses communicated one with each other from the inside through a low small interior door. The reason behind this specific characteristic was that the terrible pirate Barbarrosa used to come from the sea and sack the villages capturing people and selling them as slaves at the bazaars of Anatolia

This is a beautiful simple rustic traditional house decorated with original and traditional artifacts and materials like wool carpets, wooden floors and beams of wood, stone archs and traditional stove. Most people appreciate these characteristics. After all it's Crete you are visiting not a loft in New York.

The house has 3 verandas with gorgeous view to the ocean, two barbecue grills, an open space stone bar. Inside there is a fully equipped kitchen, a bedroom with a custom made king+ size bed and another bedroom with two single beds on the upper floor.

We call “ontas” the upper floor of the house. It is not made from cement but from wood with thick beams or whole trunks of cypress holding it.

The fabrics that we have used are all made into textiles in traditional looms. Not electric looms but  traditional one, with the use of man power. Warp, silk and cotton, are used like in the lid of the big bed on the ground floor. 

The wool used came from the tonsure of sheep. It is painted with natural dye.The embroideries are all handcrafted, even the furniture is handcrafted (carved wooden mirror, cretan sofa, marble table, chairs, big bed). All are handcrafted faithful copies of the furniture that existed in a traditional cretan home. These are very rare objects with great value.

The closet is a genuine antique as well as the lamps that hang from the ceiling. These are the characteristics of the houses that demonstrate our culture.

Everything in the house can be used by my guests. Including the BBQ and the outside stone oven. Although for that one first they would have to ask me how it works so they can cook great food in there. Or follow our house manual, town guide and Points of Interests map that we provide to all our guests after they book.

Me and my brother normally are available all the time and when there is a need. If we get a phone call or email from our guests we respond promptly. Nevertheless we wouldn't be calling to check how things are everyday. Judging from ourselves we believe that once our guests are in the house with no problems they can appreciate some privacy and ease of mind. 

There is pubic transport almost every hour and at rush hours every 30 minutes. After you book I ll send you an email with all the important information you will need and with extra services I can offer like taxi transfer from airport, links for excursions, car rentals and more.
